The Arthur Johnson Memorial Library in Raton, New Mexico

The Arthur Johnson Memorial Library, located in the historical Post Office building at 244 Cook Avenue in Raton, has welcomed patrons for 95 years now. In fact, the library welcomes all residents of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado to peruse their extensive collection of over 49,000 books. But libraries aren’t just about books anymore. Other materials include audio books, videos, DVDs, CDs, and many periodicals, and past issues of the Raton Range are on microfilm.

In addition, computer and Internet access is free to the public. Recently the library established a media center with two Apple computers and a color printer for those wishing to create color handouts using desktop publishing, download files, or print photographs from digital cameras.

Their Summer Story Reading program begins June 13th and will be held every Wednesday at 10 a.m. This year's theme, "The Mystery and Magic of Books," is designed for children aged preschool through 6th grade to encourage reading and to complete projects for contest rewards. Likewise, adult groups such as the Raton Writers Guild and the Great Books Foundation Discussion Group hold regular meetings. Call for more information (505) 445-9711.
