As another year end approaches, the staff at the First National
Bank in Trinidad is busy making final preparations for the 22nd annual open
house and calendar distribution. The 2008 Historic Collector's Series Calendar,
"A Step Back in Time," will be available on a first-come, first-served basis on
Monday, December 3rd from 9a.m.-3p.m. in Trinidad at the main bank, the motor
bank or the Wal-Mart branch, as well as the branch in Walsenburg and office in
Raton. |

The calendar's theme, "Merchants and Businessmen From a Bygone
Era," introduces us to turn-of-the-century lodging in Raton, the early
automobile business in Walsenburg, local grocery stores and meat markets in
Trinidad, and the early development of the department store concept as it took
shape in the early 1900s. This year, an unusual artistic technique was used.
Calendar artist Doug Holdread accepted a challenge to paint a watercolor "slice"
or section of the dominant black and white photograph featured each month.
Later, each full-color "slice" was blended into the black and white photograph
creating a seamless merge of the two mediums. The process is both unique and
impressive. We hope you'll like it!
| Author, historian and researcher Ken Fletcher is no stranger to the calendar. This is Ken's fifth venture in
the production of the historic calendar series. It has been a pleasure to relate his findings, after researching numerous
documents and newspapers discovered in local libraries, regarding various subjects from our area's rich and fascinating past.
Ken Fletcher and Doug Holdread will be on hand to sign calendars during the open house reception at the main bank, along with
Pat Romero from the Apishapa Valley Historical Society. As always, the 2008 calendar will be distributed as a gift to the
communities and all area residents are encouraged to attend the festivities at one of the bank's open house locations. |

Calendar Artist, Doug Holdread came to Trinidad in 1971 to study
drawing, painting and sculpture at Trinidad State Junior College from instructor
Bill Johnson, who took over the art program for Arthur Roy Mitchell. Doug went
on to earn his Masters Degree in art at Adams State College and is now head of
TSJC's art program. The 2008 calendar is his third venture in the historic
series. The 1988 calendar featured his illustrations of events in the history of
Trinidad and Las Animas County; his second, the 1997 calendar, commemorated the
175th anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail. Those watercolor paintings are now part
of a permanent collection at the Santa Fe Trail Center in Larned, Kansas and
have been used by the National Park Service in their interpretive exhibits along
the Santa Fe Trail, from Independence, Missouri to Museum Hill in Santa Fe.
Regarding his 2008 calendar effort Doug commented, "It was a unique project,
much different from anything I've done before. I enjoyed the creative challenge
of preserving the basic integrity of the black and white historic photographs
while enhancing them with the loose freedom of the watercolor medium." |
