The Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center and
Community Outreach Woman's Center

Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, Sandy Dolak, RN and her husband moved to Huerfano County four years ago to enjoy the beauty and quality of life as well as contribute to the medical needs of the community and practice her vision of quality, affordable health care services.

Huerfano County had been without family planning services for several years and unfortunately has the highest teen pregnancy rate for a Colorado community with less than 10,000 people. Remedying this problem was an obvious priority for Sandy who has 25 years experience caring for women. By November 2002, a Women’s Services Clinic was established in a brightly renovated building in mid-town Walsenburg providing low cost or free family planning services.

Over the past three years it has grown and expanded to include Colorado Women’s Cancer Control Initiative services for women between 40 - 64 years which include clinical breast exams, pap smears and mammograms. This program is based on very generous income guidelines so many women could be eligible for free services. The clinic is now testing and treating cases of sexually transmitted diseases including males, too, and offers free monthly HIV testing and counseling.

The latest program additions are for pregnant women and include Nurse-Family Partnership, PreNatal Plus and Bright Beginnings. On a monthly basis, Dr. John Carlton, an experienced, board certified, obstetrician and gynecologist, provides professional services as well as local surgeries for area women.

The Outreach Center continues to be a model for community services. In addition to the Women’s Clinic, the building is also home for Advocates Against Domestic Assault, Partners Mentoring, Sangre de Cristo Hospice and provides office/clinical space for a variety of health care providers that visit the area on a rotating basis.
